  • New Legislation: There is a discussion draft in the Senate of a Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act that proposes to move the Medical Reserve Corps out from under the Office of the Surgeon General.  The bill proposes that the MRC be housed under the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.  Read the discussion draft of the proposed bill here.  If you have questions about a section of the bill, please let us know and we will do our best to clarify.  If you have an opinion about the proposed bill, please contact your representative in the Senate or the House of Representatives and let them know what you think. 
  • DISASTER DRILL AND TRAINING -  There will be a local preparedness drill as part of a mass-immunization exercise on Thursday, October 27, organized by the Virginia Department of Health.  This will serve as our general membership meeting for the month of October.  Please check out the updated Schedule of Events for more info!

  • The UVAMRC recently received a donation from Wal-Mart to support a communit-outreach project.  See the Scrapbook for a picture and more info!

  • The UVAMRC participated in Clinical Connections in June 2005, a day-long training for 3rd year med students at UVA.  Assistant Faculty Director Dr. Mark Kirk, as well as student Director of Planning and Development Joe Baltz, were featured in a local news story covering this event.

  • Newsletters are now available for both the VAMRC (representing MRC units in Virginia) and Region III (representing MRC units in PA, DE, MD, DC, VA, and WV).  Check them out!

  • UVAMRC leaders recently attended and presented at the 3rd annual Medical Reserve Corps National Leadership Conference , held in San Francisco, CA.  The slides from this presentation are now available to view... just click here to download the Powerpoint file.  Also, the  Scrapbook  was updated with pictures from this recent trip.  Check it out!

  • A General Introduction/Mass Dispensing Training Meeting was held Thursday, September 16, 2004.  If you are a member and missed the meeting, please go  here to see the information presented.

  • On July 7, 2004 Governor Warner announced the establishment of the Terrorism and Disaster Behavioral Health Advisory Council (TADBHAC).  Members of this council includes our own Dr. Ed Kantor, Kim Dowdell, and Dave Beckert.  Click here to read the press release.

  • On July 7-9th, UVAMRC Student Leaders and Dr. Kantor attended Reserve Corps National Leadership Conference in Baltimore and presented a workshop on Best Practice in Community and Integration Partnerships.

  • On January 5, 2004, the  Daily Progress and the Associated Press featured articles on the UVAMRC.  And two days later, on January 7, 2004, the Daily Progress complimented the UVAMRC in an  editorial.

  • The University of Virginia Health System published a  Press Release on December 19, 2003, announcing the official founding of the UVAMRC.

  • On October 30, 2003, the UVAMRC received a federal grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.  This grant will serve to provide necessary funding to our organization over the next three years.  Click  here to read more about this exciting news release, or visit the national  Medical Reserve Corps homepage.
