Telethon 2008

Since 1985, the UVA Children's Hospital Telethon has raised more than $20 million for patients and families. Each year, the event marks the culmination of generous annual giving by community businesses and friends who support children's healthcare. Broadcast locally by WVIR-NBC 29, the two-day event is part of a national effort to raise funds for children's health.

Where Will Your Telethon Dollars Go?

  • To renovate primary care space, making it more child-friendly.  Children may spend hours in these rooms while getting their cancer infusion therapies and other treatments.  Renovations and design additions will make this space more comfortable and more fun for children.

  • To support UVA Children's Hospital expansion project -- the Barry and Bill Battle Building at UVA Children's Hospital.  The new facility will be designed especially for children and offer a variety of services.

  • To provide special items and services that are not covered by insurance, but which provide comfort and a welcome distraction for young patients.
    • Education and social events help hospitalized children learn more about managing their illnesses and encourage them to get out of bed and play.

    • The Reach Out and Read Program sends every child who visits a UVA doctor for well child care at the Primary Care Center or Orange Pediatrics home with a new book.  Our doctors help children develop strong bodies AND strong minds!

    • Support for families to buy meals and gas, so they can visit their children more often.

    • Toys, movies, games, special furniture, and other items help sick children relax and feel more at home.

  • To fund lifesaving pediatric research.  Telethon donations support researchers conducting lifesaving research in childhood illnesses.  Telethon funds give researchers the start-up monies they need to secure early results and compete successfully for larger National Institutes of Health grants.  For each Telethon research dollar given, our investigators have seen a $30 return in federal grant funding.

Every penny raised in Central Virginia remains in the community to support the work of UVA Children's Hospital. Telethon supporters receive recognition during the live broadcast and in UVA Children's Hospital publications.

Gifts to the Telethon are tax-deductible.
