New Medications to Treat Alcohol Dependence

New Medications to Treat Alcohol Dependence is an inpatient research study designed to test the effect of an investigational medication on drinking alcohol. Individuals, between the ages 21 - 45,  who qualify to participate attend 2 inpatient session at the University of Virginia Hospital. These inpatient  session each last 9 days.

During 9 day inpatient sessions patients will receive the study medication or placebo, and drink alcohol provided by the staff. There is no treatment component associated with this study. Participants receive study-related physical exam, lab tests, and medical assessment.  Participants receive $1,900-$2,000 for completion of the study.

Screening for this study is initially done over the telephone and takes 10-15 minutes. If there is nothing found from the telephone pre-screen that would make someone ineligible to participate they then come into the clinic for a more thorough in clinic screen which last about 6 hours.
