This study is a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, flexible dose study to assess the safety and efficacy of topiramate in the treatment of alcohol dependence.
This study is a 17 week clinical trial in which participants are given the active study medication or a placebo. During the 17 weeks of the study, participants come to the clinic once a week to meet with UVA CARE's nurse practitioners and research specialists. These visits last about 2 hours.
There is no therapy component to this clinical trial.
Screening for participation in this study is initially done over the telephone and takes 10-15 minutes. If there is nothing found from the telephone pre-screen that would make someone ineligible to participate they then come into the clinic for a more thorough in clinic screen. The in clinic screening for this study is done over two visits each lasting about 3 hours.
