Lab Trials to Develop Medications for Cocaine Dependence

Lab Trials to Develop Medicaations for Cocaine Dependence is an inpatient research study designed to test the effects of an investigational medication (topiramate) on the craving and euphoria associated with cocaine use. Individuals, between the ages 18 - 45,  who qualify to participate attend 2 inpatient session at the University of Virginia Hospital. These inpatient  session each last 9 days.

During 9 day inpatient sessions patients will receive the study medication or placebo, and cocaine provided by the staff. There is no treatment component associated with this study. Participants receive study-related physical exam, lab tests, and medical assessment.  Participants receive $2,000 - $2,050 for completion of the study.

Screening for this study is initially done over the telephone and takes 10-15 minutes. If there is nothing found from the telephone pre-screen that would make someone ineligible to participate they then come into the clinic for a more thorough in clinic screen which last about 6 hours.
