The Patient Assistance Fund: A Way to Give
Transplantation procedures save lives and have great benefits for patients with end-stage diseases. But they can also generate financial burdens that are difficult to bear. In many cases costs can occur that are not always covered by insurance and can be a significant problem for many patients.
The transplant programs at the University of Virginia maintain a patient assistance fund that is used (with discretion) to provide occasional assistance to patients who otherwise might not be able to obtain needed therapy such as mediations.
Expenses for which the fund that might be used include: hotel costs for an out-of-town appointment; gas mileage (to and from an appointment); medications for a short period. By contributing to the patient assistance fund you can help to ensure that the life-saving benefits of transplantation are within reach for someone in need.
