Pancreas Transplantation

Established in 1988, the pancreas transplant program at the University of Virginia is one of the busiest programs of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The program has provided care to more than 125 pancreas recipients. Many of these patients have been high-risk candidates  and the UVa transplant team has used its extensive transplant expertise to ensure positive outcomes.

Pancreas transplantation is a treatment option available for patients with type 1 diabetes who have difficulty with labile blood sugarsLabile Blood Sugars: Refers to quick and wide swings in blood sugar level from high to low and from low to high. but are unable to detect when their glucose levels are dropping.  A pancreas transplant can be performed under the following medical situations:

  • at the same time as a kidney (from a deceased donor) when both organs are required,
  • after a living donor kidney transplant when the pancreas has become weakened, or
  • to replace a pancreas for patients who do not have kidney disease associated with their diabetes.
