Lung Research in Transition

The University of Virginia's lung transplant program partners with a variety of pulmonary professionals to undertake research that improve patient safety and improve outcomes for our patients.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

The University of Virginia participates in a multi-site international study of the efficacy and safety of treatment with pirfenidone in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). IPF is a serious interstitial lung disease of unknown etiology characterized by fibrosis of the lung interstitium, progressive pulmonary insufficiency, and poor survival. IPF affects approximately 83,000 adults in the United States and more than 60,000 adults in Europe. Approximately 580 patients will be enrolled at centers around the world.
