University of Virginia Office of Telemedicine
Craig County School Health Outreach Project

Craig County
Mission

Funded by a generous grant from the WestWind Foundation, in collaboration with the staff and students of the Craig County School System, the University of Virginia Office of Telemedicine has developed a unique outreach project using advanced computer and telecommunications technologies. Our mission is to provide enhanced access to medical care and health information to teachers, students and citizens of Craig County, a rural county in southwest Virginia. We hope to broaden their knowledge of a variety of health topics which include physical activity, nutrition, eating disorders, tobacco use , substance abuse, mental health, peer pressure, and issues related to verbal and physical abuse.

Distance Learning

Through interactive distance learning technologies, students, teachers and members of the Craig County community can avail themselves of diverse educational offerings addressing issues of Health and Science.

Programs will be broadcast from the UVa Telemedicine office in Charlottesville and connect with the audience in New Castle, Virginia. Connecting through a video link using Polycom equipment, the speaker will present to audiences at two locations in the high school. The connection between the two sites is live, enabling the audience to interact with the guest speaker. Presentations will be enhanced by the addition of audiovisual support in the form of Powerpoint, slides, and video clips.

Clinical Consultations

The University of Virginia Health System has provided consultations linking patients with our medical specialists using telemedicine technologies currently deployed at 57 sites in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We have used these technologies to disseminate hundreds of hours of patient, student and health professional educational programs. With the support of the Craig County School system, we offer emergency and elective pediatric consultative services to the students at all grade levels through a videoconferencing linkage with the school nurse, Ms. Trena Boudreaux, in her health classroom. In addition, in coordination with our colleagues at Radford University, we provide consultative support through their Mobile Health Unit, according to collaboratively designed protocols.
