Surgeons at the University of Virginia performed the first pancreas/kidney transplant in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1988 and the first solitary pancreas transplant in the Commonwealth in 1989. Since then, UVa's transplant surgeons have performed over 50 pancreas transplants, more than those in any other program in Virginia. For patients with Type I diabetes requiring pancreas transplantation, the University of Virginia has coupled innovative surgical techniques with important research on glucose and insulin metabolism.

Building on this considerable experience, the Charles O. Strickler Transplant Center at the University of Virginia offers an outstanding team of surgeons and nephrologists, as well as an extensive support staff and other caregivers. Working closely with the patient's primary care physician, the transplant team coordinates the best long-term care and outcomes for the patient.
