Information for Residency Applicants

Welcome to UVA!

The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia has a long and accomplished history of excellence in surgery and surgical education. During the 20th century, the Chairman of the Department was held by only four individuals, two of whom were also President of the American College of Surgeons.

The residency program in Surgery is nationally recognized as a top tier training program, attracting top candidates from medical schools throughout the country. We are dedicated to continuing our commitment to excellence in clinical surgery, teaching, and surgical research. We hope that you will consider applying to our program and joining us in this mission.

Applicants and residents come to us from medical schools throughout the country and from top-tier international programs.  Graduates of our program are consistently accepted into excellent fellowship programs of their choice.

Positions and Codes:

Our General Surgery Residency Program offers three classifications for applicants:

5 Year Categorical General Surgery (NRMP Code 1737440C0) is for individuals who want to complete training in general surgery. In addition to clinical training, most residents in this program perform one to two years of basic science research, usually accomplished between PGY2 and PGY3.

1 Year Designated Preliminary Surgery (NRMP Code 1737440P0) is for individuals who will have matched early in a surgical or non-surgical residency and who need or desire a surgical internship.
  • Applicants who are accepted at UVa in early match with ENT, Urology, and Neurosurgery are automatically granted this position.
  • Applicants designated for another institution or for another subspeciality at UVa (e.g., Radiology, Anesthesiology) following their internship must provide a letter of acceptance from that institution. A personal interview is not required, but applicants must speak by phone to the Program Director, Bruce Schirmer, M.D. at 434-924-9307.
1-2 Year Non-Designated Preliminary Surgery (NRMP Code 1737440P1) is for individuals who do not have a categorical or designated position in a surgery program. A limited number of these positions is available and a second year is not automatic. Although our residency office will assist with placement following the intern year, it is ultimately each resident's responsibility to make arrangements for continuing education.
