Expectations for the Third Year Medical Student Clerkship in Anesthesiology
- 1. You will be divided into either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesay group, or Wednesday, Thursday, Friday group. Please see below for the schedule of how the week will be arranged.
- 2. If you are beginning your anesthesia rotation on Monday, you will join our department after your surgery orientation which is scheduled from 6:00-7:00 AM.
- 3. For the Monday group, you will receive an e-mail Sunday evening with your anesthesia assignment. This will include an anesthesia resident's name, pic number, and location (ie, Main OR, Outpatient Surgical Center, OB anesthesia (8th floor), GU OR (West Hospital), ECT. Please page or call your assigned resident the night prior to discuss your cases and meeting location for Monday at 7:00. If you are unable to reach them, you can page them Monday morning after the clerkship orientation. If you do not receive an e-mail with your assignment of have any questions, please page Dr. Ashley Shilling (PIC# 3302) or Dr. Chris Stemland (PIC# 3644 ).
- 4. You should come dressed in UVA scrub attire.
- 5. On Wednesday morning, both groups will attend Anesthesia Grand Rounds from 7AM-9AM in the Jordan Hall auditiorium. Following Grand Rounds, you will partake in various workshops and teaching sessions. Neither group will be in the OR on Wednesday.
- 6. The group beginning anesthesia on Wednesday will spend Thursday and Friday in the OR. You will receive your assignment for Thursday on Wednesday afternoon.
- 7. If you are interested in any subspecialty experience- eg OB anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia, acute or chronic pain management, ICU, please let Dr. Ashley Shilling or Dr. Chris Stemland know and we will try to accommodate this with your schedule.
- 8. Please complete the Anesthesiology Procedure Log and return to Drs. Shilling or Stemland. Please fill out the rotation evaluation as well and return with Log.
- 9. We sincerely hope that these three days will provide you with an introduction of Anesthesiology and perioperative medicine.
