Learning Objectives:

All students rotating on the vascular surgery service should be able to:

  1. Incorporate a thorough pulse exam into the history and physical exam.
  2. Discuss the risk factors for atherosclerosis.
  3. Describe the diagnostic work up for and the indications for intervention for carotid stenosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and peripheral arterial occlusive disease.
  4. Describe basic principles of operative and endovascular intervention for remedy of vascular surgical problems.

Responsibilities:

All medical students are expected to attend the vascular surgery conference on Thursday at 6:45 am in the TCV conference rooms.   All students are expected to attend weekday teaching rounds in the TCV PO beginning at 8:15 am.  All medical students are expected to participate in daily work rounds with the residents and to be involved in the day-to-day management of inpatients on the service.  Students are expected to participate in operative procedures to correct vascular problems.  You should be completely prepared for every OR case prior to scrubbing in.  This means that you have reviewed the patient's history and know the results of all laboratory, radiology, and pathology studies.  In addition you will be expected to read about the patient's disease process, the treatment options, and the details of the proposed surgery, including relevant anatomy and the surgical techniques involved.  All medical students are expected to participate in evaluation of outpatients in the clinic setting.
