UVa Health System, Department of Medicine Division of Hematology and Oncology seeks people over age 18 who have experienced a blood clot (also known as a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) in the past 12 months and are currently taking blood thinner medications (anticoagulants) for a for research study.

This purpose of this study is to determine the risks and benefits of continued anticoagulation using the investigational drug, apixiban, following standard 6-12 months of anti-coagulation for the treatment of a DVT or PE.

The study involves taking an experimental medicine/placebo and 7-8 out-patient clinic visits and monthly phone contacts over the course of a year. The visits may include: blood draws, ECGs, physical exams, urine samples and pregnancy tests when applicable. Each visit is expected to last about 1 hour.

Study-related exams, tests and experimental medication provided free of charge.
Compensation for each completed study visit is $50. Total possible compensation for this study is $400.
