The content in this site is intended to help you develop your own Health Literacy curriculum at your institution. Every medical school has a unique curriculum, so some of the suggestions contained here will not necessarily fit your situation. There are three main groups of information here:
- An outline on how UVA established its curriculum. Reference materials will be provided that include a faculty development handbook and examples of written cases used at various points of the curriculum.
- An introductory Health Literacy lecture and examples of illustrations. A bibliography and various resources are outlined.
- Later in the summer of 2003, we will be adding Standardized Patient cases that will illustrate work with functionally illiterate patients as well as how to work with interpreters for the deaf and for non-English speaking patients. Some of the cases will touch tangentially on cultural competency issues as well.
