Medical Residency Program Overview

The residency program is 48 months long, with no less than 36 months being spent in the clinical core curriculum rotations of radiation oncology.  These will include rotations involving the care of oncology patients with gynecologic, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, breast, reticuloendothelial, head and neck, lung, pediatric, central nervous system, soft tissue and bone, and skin malignancies.  Eight (8) months of off-service rotations are provided and include Adult Hematology Oncology (1month), Pediatric Hematology Oncology (1month), GammaKnife (2 months), Nuclear Medicine (1 month), Physics/Dosimetry (1 month), Prostate Brachytherapy (1 month), Research (1 month). Residents are encouraged to request one month rotations at outside residency programs to supplement their training in either proton beam radiation therapy, or pediatric radiation oncology. 

      Resident training will include:

  • Didactic lectures in the areas of clinical oncology and radiation therapy, radiation physics, radiobiology, and biomedical statistics
  • Direct faculty mentoring of the residents on the clinical radiation oncology core curriculum rotations and off service rotations
  • Journal Club Presentations
  • New Patient and Simulation Conferences
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference
  • Multi-Disciplinary Tumor Boards
  • Quality Assessment and Improvement Committee participation
  • Residency Curriculum Committee participation
  • Extramural lectures and conferences
  • Resident investigative projects
  • Resident teaching of clinical oncology to training therapists in the Radiation Oncology Technology School

Based on the number of faculty, and new patient consultations and re-consultations treated annually at the University Hospital and Moser facilities, a total of 6 residents will generally be enrolled in the residency program at one time.
