Samuel J. Dwyer, III, PhD, FSCAR
1933-2008
Samuel (Sam) Dwyer, III, PhD, one of our department's most illustrious professors, died on Wednesday at the age of 74. Dr. Dwyer was one of the original contributors to the field of digital medical imaging and was the ninth individual inducted into the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology and served as its Chairman in 1990.
While here, he worked very closely with Bruce Hillman after coming from UCLA where he was Professor and Chief of the Division of Medical Imaging.
A very nice personal history detailing Dr. Dwyer's career is available at this link:
A prolific investigator, pioneer of digital imaging, and national leader, he was always exceedingly humble, appreciative of UVa, and devoted to his colleagues and the department.
