Radiology Research - Breast Imaging

Current Projects

Clinical Trials:

Digital Mammography (ACRIN DMIST trial)
This is a National multisite trial.  In this study, women receive a film and a digital mammogram on the same day, which are read by different radiologists.  The purpose is to compare the sensitivity and specificity of digital versus analog mammograms.

Dual Modality Scinti - Contralateral Breast MRI
Scintimammography, or single gamma nuclear imaging of the breast is a promising tool to characterize certain biological properties of suspicious breast masses. However it suffers from several drawbacks including poor sensitivity for small lesions and lack of reliable methods to correlate the scintimammographic finding with those of other imaging modalities. We are developing a system designed to overcome some of these problems. The system combines x-ray mammography with scintimammography on a common gantry. The x-ray and gamma images are acquired in quick succession, with the breast in a common configuration under mild compression.  To learn more about this research, visit http://imaging.med.virginia.edu/mbwlab/index.html

ACRIN multicenter trial.
Women recently diagnosed with breast cancer receive a breast MRI study to evaluate for breast cancer in the opposite breast.

Hydroxytomoxifen Gel for Treatment of Cyclic Mastalgia
In this study, women apply a topical gel to the breasts twice per day (4-hydroxtomoxifen or placebo) to evaluate for reduction of breast pain related to the premenstrual portion of the cycle.  The study is closed to accrual and is in follow-up.
