The Department of Radiology now offers Virtual Colonoscopy, a new screening test for polyps and colorectal cancer. Most colorectal cancer can be prevented by detection and removal of precancerous polyps. Experts also believe that more than 90% of colorectal cancer can be cured if diagnosed early. Therefore, colorectal screening is strongly recommended! The American Cancer Society recommends that periodic screening begin at age 50 years for average-risk persons and earlier for those with significant risk factors. The software that is used for Virtual Colonoscopy is Viatronix V3-D which allows our Radiologist to take a virtual flight down your colon to search for polyps. This new procedures eliminates the need for placing and moving a scope through your colon, as is required with a traditional colonoscopy. What patients are saying...
Because the procedure is new, it is not covered by most insurance plans when used for cancer screening. At UVA, the all-inclusive charge for Virtual Colonoscopy is $1,100.00 and is payable at the time of the procedure. If you have a documented medical need for this procedure, it may be covered by your insurance, but you will need to check with your insurance carrier.
