Angiography 1. A request for the procedure is required. 2. Nothing to eat after midnight. May have clear liquids until four (4) hours before scheduled appointment time. 3. Must have a recent History and Physical, or a copy of one, on the patient's chart prior to starting the procedure. 4. Laboratory values must be within normal limits. CBC with platelet count 5. Is the patient allergic to iodinated contrast? If the answer is yes, premedications must be ordered. Contact Neuroradiology for recommended medications and dosages. 6. If the patient is taking anticoagulant medications, such as Coumadin, he/ she should be taken off of these at least three days prior to the procedure. In addition, the patient should make arrangements to arrive one-and-one-half hours earlier than their appointment time to have additional lab work done. 7. The patient must not take insulin or oral hypoglycemic medications on the day of the procedure. The patient should bring their insulin with them to the hospital. 8. Metformin (glucophage) must not be taken the day of the procedure. Bring the medication with you the day of the procedure. 9. Does the patient weigh more than 300 pounds? This can be a problem, given the weight limit of the angio tables. Call for further information. 10. If possible, recommend that the patient receive pre-procedure teaching in the Pre-Admission Assessment Center on the day prior to the procedure. Lab work can be done there, as well. 11. An admission to the hospital should be arranged. This can be a short stay or 23-hour stay, at the discretion of the referring physician. 12. The patient should make arrangements to have someone drive them home after discharge. 13. Pertinent prior radiographic studies should accompany the patient.
