Musculoskeletal Fellowship:

Logistics

Local ImageThe musculoskeletal radiology division covers conventional radiography for the Emergency Department half of the time as well as all other musculoskeletal imaging at the hospital.  Spine imaging is shared with neuroradiology based on the referring physician, and trauma spine is divided on an every other month basis.

The bulk of the work is done at a new off-site Musculoskeletal Center (seen below) which is located about a mile from the main hospital and is comprised of Radiology, Orthopedics, Rheumatology, and Physical Medicine clinics.  The Musculoskeletal Center is in continuity with a 60-bed rehabilitation hospital.  Conventional radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and a 1.5 T short-bore MRI are on site for dedicated musculoskeletal imaging.  A new Imaging Center next door houses an additional 1.5T MR unit as well as a 0.7T open MRI machine and two multidetector helical CT scanners.  Two staff, two fellows, and one resident cover this facility.  There is a second off-site Sports Medicine Center where only conventional radiography is performed.

There is a close working relationship with the clinical departments; all musculoskeletal attendings have academic appointments in the orthopedic department.  As one might expect in this environment, there is a good mix of bone diseases at UVA including trauma, diseases of the spine, foot and ankle, and upper extremity, tumors, arthritis, and sports-related injuries.
