- Prone LORAD stereotactic table with Mammotome device
- Clinic space for surgical consultation, high-risk clinic, indigent care, benign breast disease clinic, and lymphedema clinic (3 exam rooms, procedure room that is "OR ready", and 2 consultation rooms)
2. Northridge Mammography
- Adjacent to Women's Center for Midlife Health
- Two mammography units, including a GE Senographe Digital unit
- DEXA
- Films are transported and read at the UVA Breast Care. Center.
3. Other imaging sites
- Diagnostic Radiology Center in Orange, Virginia. About 40 minutes from Charlottesville (not staffed by radiologists)
- Outside contracts for mammography reading, including Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, Buchannan General Hospital, Bath County Hospital, Blue Ridge Center for Women. Films sent to Breast Center for interpretation.
- Mobile Van- recently obtained.
We have a strong interventional breast program, performing over 800 breast procedures in 2002. Most women with an abnormal mammogram are evaluated by core biopsy. About half are done by ultrasound guidance and half by stereotactic guidance using a LORAD prone table with digital imaging. We use both conventional core-needle biopsy devices and the Mammotome Biopsy device.
We have a strong research program as well. Our interests are diverse, ranging from clinical to basic science studies. My primary area of research interest is estrogen effects on the breast. We are also participating in multicenter studies of breast MRI and digital mammography (ACRIN DMIST site). Our division works with several Ph.D. radiology faculty who are currently studying scintimammography (designing new image receptors), digital assessment of breast density, digital mammography receptors, and digital mammography workstation design. Our previous fellows have enjoyed participating in one or more projects and have attended meetings to present their work.
We currently have two fellows. Our mammography faculty currently includes Dr. Jennifer A. Harvey, Dr. Michael Cohen and Dr. Brandi Nicholson. We will be interviewing this fall and winter.
