With mobile mammography, screening mammograms can be performed at worksites and UVa Breast Care Program now offers community sites. This program furnishes high quality mammograms and service to women in their workplace and/or community setting. The self-contained mammography unit can park at or near the site and perform mammography on 25 women in an eight-hour day. The mammograms performed are screening mammograms only. Women who have a history of breast problems or women with implants must have their studies (diagnostic mammogram) performed at the main hospital breast-imaging center. There are special financial programs available to assist in covering the costs of a mammogram. Please inquire about qualifying for these services. Mobile Mammography Process: The site visit is coordinated with staff at the business or community organization. Women schedule their appointments through the site coordinator. The van parks at the site in a convenient location so that women are away from the job for a limited period of time. The woman enters the van through a reception area. She then proceeds to the dressing room next to the mammography suite where she will fill out a brief breast history form; the mammogram is taken, she dresses and returns to the reception area. It will then be explained how her results will be communicated. Literature about breast health, breast cancer risks, importance of healthy life style, exercise and nutrition are available in the van. Results of the mammogram: The woman will receive a letter with the mammography screening results within two weeks. A copy of the report will be sent to her family physician. Follow Up If a woman receives a letter stating that she needs a follow up or more extensive breast imaging, breast center staff to schedule an appointment will contact her.
