UVA radiology strongly supports resident participation in research and has an outstanding research infrastructure. We have a special research track designed to provide the research resident with the skills to excel as an academic radiologist. Our diagnostic and IR track residents participate in research during their time in residency. Some participate in ongoing research projects and others initiate their own projects. |

In addition to clinical faculty mentors, there are over 10 imaging research faculty (PhDs) in the department who serve as mentors and/or collaborators to radiology residents. UVA radiology has three dedicated research whole body MRI scanners (two 1.5 T and one 3T), a 7 T small animal MRI scanner, a small animal PET scanner, and a small animal CT scanner. Furthermore, we recently obtained a combined focused high intensity ultrasound and whole body 1.5 T MRI scanner, and will soon install a cyclotron. The research division at UVA has particular strengths in cardiovascular imaging, neuroscience imaging, lung imaging, MRI pulse sequence development, and small animal imaging. To financially support resident research, there is a competitive internal funding program for radiology trainees. Many residents present their work at national meetings. For example in the 2008-2009 academic year, 15 residents attended RSNA, 9 ARRS, 9 AUR, 7 SIR, 3 ACR, 3 SGR, and 1 SPR. |
