Bobbye Cohen One of Five to be Named

University of Virginia Medical Center
We wish to congratulate Bobbye Cohen on this well deserved honor. Those of us who have worked with her share a common perspective. Our collection of testimonials from bedside nurses, the teaching community, her managers, her church minister, former patients and from the radiologists were woven together as a nomination that created the platform upon which an honor such as this could be placed. This Award is one of the highest achievements within the University System. It speaks clearly of the extreme measures of competence, commitment and compassion in Bobbye's long career as a nurse at UVA
Clinically her calming influence impresses both professional staff and patients alike. She is cited monthly in reports on patient satisfaction. Rather than for grand heroics, Bobbye is known for working quietly behind the scenes, coordinating patient care and procedures skillfully. She minimizes the potential for an unexpected event to occur with radiology patients because she is so thorough.
Bobbye is well known for her commitment to patient care and safety through her work on the Radiology Safety Committee. She understands the roles, functions and difficulties of the many professionals, whose efforts must be coordinated for a good patient outcome. Her perspectives from 30 years of nursing at UVA are invaluable, and she generously shares these perspectives which contributes to refining our best practice models.
Vickie Taylor relates how when the representatives of JCAHO asked for a number of competency records, which Bobbye maintains, she was able to access them with ease. They were accurate, accessible and up to date, causing the inspector to comment, "you can be proud, this was excellent".
Bobbye contributes generously and with good effect on many levels in our community. She takes good care of herself and of her family, she takes care of her colleagues, she takes care of the people in her church, of her devoted friends, a fabulous yard full of plants ...she takes care of the boy across the street and she takes care of the broader community in several volunteer roles. That is just Bobbye Cohen.
In addition she is known for her commitment to education most notably through the monthly Nursing Inservices and educational programs through the Blue Ridge Chapter of American Radiology Nursing Association. Of course the opportunity to teach by example and offer a word of encouragement are also very much a part of her commitment to education.
