Quality and Cancer Care at UVa

National Recognition

U.S. News & World Report recognizes UVa's Cancer Center as one of the top cancer centers in the nation. UVa is also a National Cancer Institute Cancer Center. To be recognized by the NCI, a center must have a substantial portfolio of cancer research support and a scientific staff recognized for its cancer research skills in a wide array of scientific areas.

Innovation

UVa cancer physicians employ the latest advances in cancer care, including sophisticated diagnostic imaging technologies, and a new generation of more targeted drugs and radiation therapy that means fewer side effects for the patient. UVa Cancer Center was the first in the region to offer many medical innovations, including:

  • One of the nation’s few TomoTherapy radiation therapy systems, capable of delivering highly focused radiation directly to the affected area, limiting damage to healthy tissue.

  • The Gamma Knife, one of only two in Virginia, which physicians at UVa helped develop.

  • The first PET/CT scanner in Virginia.

  • Nerve-sparing, minimally invasive daVinci robotic surgery system for prostate and bladder cancers.
