UVa's Chest Pain Center

UVa's Chest Pain Center is the only one in Charlottesville and the only one in our region accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. That accreditation gives patients the added assurance that they are receiving the highest quality care available. Located within the Emergency Department, the Chest Pain Center (CPC) is a discrete 5-bed unit focused on the care of patients presenting with cardiovascular emergencies. It is equipped with 12-lead electroncardiographic and continuous ST-segment monitoring systems.

The Center, which treats numerous patients per year, enables emergency personnel to provide rapid assessment and treatment, a recognized necessity for treating individuals with heart attacks. The Chest Paint Center also provides a research tool to study innovative techniques for evaluating or diagnosing acute chest pain in the emergency setting.

The Chest Pain Center is staffed by Emergency Medicine board-certified faculty physicians and specialized nurses with training in emergency cardiovascular care. Emergency Medicine and other rotating residents are important contributors in the care of the CPC patients. Cardiology consultation services are available around the clock every day. A variety of research projects and clinical process improvement initiatives are always underway in the CPC. Collaboration between the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Heart and Vascular Center has been the key to the CPC's continued success.
