Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology
The fellowship in forensic psychology provides a broad variety of experience and training primarily in the area of assessment. Time is divided throughout each week between two sites. Western State Hospital (WSH) is a facility that provides opportunities for inpatient forensic assessments that range from informing courts regarding treatment issues to competency to stand trial and mental status at the time of the alleged offense. The fellow works within a multidisciplinary treatment team model. The University of Virginia's Institute for Law, Psychiatry, & Public Policy (ILPPP) provides a unique opportunity for both education and practical clinical training. Through the ILPPP, training is offered in a variety of areas pertinent to conducting forensic assessment, including pertinent law; basic knowledge and skills necessary for conducting forensic evaluations; civil commitment; specific training in the areas of competency to stand trial, mental status at the time of the alleged offense, juvenile competency to stand trial, sex offender evaluations, risk assessment, capital sentencing, and others. The ILPPP conducts intensive evaluations on various criminal forensic issues primarily in an outpatient setting. Occasionally, civil forensic evaluations are conducted. Fellow may attend law school classes that are pertinent to the forensic mental health area. Through these different settings, the fellow is exposed to different styles and approaches to conducting forensic evaluations. Conducting evaluations and discussing the issues involved allows the fellow to gain experience in appreciating nuances that are involved in this field of practice. Occasionally, fellows are called upon to assist with training of other mental health professionals. Fellows may also participate in ongoing research projects. Drs. David Rawls and Daniel Murrie direct the fellowship.
