Data point to key benefits of robotic surgery for prostate

In medicine, the data is the ultimate indicator of whether a new procedure or technique offers real benefits to patients. In the case of prostatectomy, robotic surgery offers some real advantages over traditional, open surgery.

The data below represents the robotic prostatecomy patients at UVA since the inception of the program in 2003 for three key indicators:  Margins, Pain, Blood Loss and Length of Stay. We compared these patients to open prostatectomy patients done at UVA since January 1, 2004.

Margins:  69% of patients had cancer free margins. (versus 57% for open surgery patients)

Pain:  Average patient scored 1.6 on 0-10 pain scale on the day following surgery.  (Versus 2.4 for open surgery patients)

Blood Loss:  Average patient lost 200 cc's of blood.  No transfusions done.  (Open surgery patients lost 1,480 cc's of blood)

Length of Stay:  Average patient stays 2.5 days.  82% of patients leave within 2 days.  (Average stay for open surgery patients was 3.9 days)
