F acials & Skin Care Products
To help our clients look and feel their best, we offer a three-step facial to smooth away fine lines, improve skin tone and elasticity, and help eliminate dryness, skin discoloration and blemishes. Following an initial evaluation by one of our plastic surgeons, each client receives a deep cleansing facial or micropeel to open the pores. This is followed by a steam treatment and finally, by the cosmetic facial. The cosmetic facial involves the face, neck and upper chest and uses Gly Derm, a product containing the alphahydroxy acid called glycolic acid combined with fruit alcohols. For the best outcome, we recommend that the cosmetic facial be performed every week for 6 weeks and we carry several skin care products from Gly Derm for use at home to maximize the benefits of the facials.

T he Chronic Wound Care Clinic (CWCC)
The goal of the Chronic Wound Care Clinic since its beginning has been to coordinate all aspects of patient evaluations regarding their wounds within a single clinic. To accomplish this goal, the CWCC has organized a multidisciplinary team of plastic surgeons, wound care specialists, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists, and specialists in rehabilitative medicine, prosthetic and orthotic services, and home health services. Additionally, the CWCC consults frequently with many other departments at the University of Virginia Health System and uses the newest technology and scientific advances to enhance the care provided to our patients. These advances include digital photography to monitor the size and status of each wound, growth factor therapy to stimulate healing, skin oxygen level measurement to assess the health of the skin and underlying tissue, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. A web page devoted to our CWCC can be seen by clicking here.

The Preventive Foot Care Clinic
The Preventive Foot Care Clinic is an expansion of services offered by Catherine Ratliff, PhD, RN and Ann Donovan, RN of the Chronic Wound Care Clinic. The purpose of the clinic is to provide care for foot wounds and toenails, give advice on proper footwear, and generally focus on wound prevention in patients at risk for developing foot wounds. In addition to this clinic's success in our hospital, Dr. Ratliff and Ms. Donovan have developed a successful program with the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) to provide service and education on foot care to the elderly population and their care providers in our community. For more information, or to make an appointment, contact the Chronic Wound Care Clinic at (434) 982-2922 (982-CWCC).

T he Craniofacial Clinic
The Craniofacial Clinic is held weekly by the four department faculty members and pediatric nurse coordinator who comprise the Division of Craniofacial Surgery. This multidisciplinary clinic offers our patients optimal care by consulting with the Departments of Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Radiology and Anesthesiology, as well as with genetics and speech pathology specialists. To further enhance our patient care, we have developed a new cleft palate speech laboratory, new and improved imaging of the skull for surgery planning and post-surgery assessment, and new techniques to assess the outcome of our treatments. Appointments for this clinic may be made by dialing (434) 924-5801 or (434) 924-2528.

T he DeCamp Burn & Wound Healing Center
The DeCamp Burn & Wound Healing Center is a 16-bed dedicated unit on the 7th floor of the University Hospital. The Center is composed of a multidisciplinary staff engaged in treating acute thermal, chemical, and electrical burn injuries. This Center is also dedicated to the treatment and management of complex wounds, both acute and chronic. The focus is on the thorough physiologic and psychosocial rehabilitation of the patient across the care continuum. Further inquiries may be addressed to the medical director, Dr. David Drake, at (434) 924-2123, Debra Shaffer, RN, patient care services manager, at (434) 924-4033, or the Center directly at (434) 924-BURN (2876).

The Hand Surgery Clinic
The Department has an active interest in treating and managing complex and routine problems involving the upper extremity and hand. Doctors Morgan and Drake have added board certification in surgery of the hand. A combined Hand Clinic is held on Thursdays with the residents and hand fellows in attendance. A certified hand therapist also attends the clinic to provide immediate evaluation and therapy as indicated. Appointments may be made by calling (434) 924-2413 for Dr. Morgan and (434) 924-2123 for Dr. Drake.

T he Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center
The Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center offers two state-of-the-art services to both inpatients and outpatients at the University: hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy and transcutaneous oximetry (often referred to as TCOM). TCOM is a non-invasive way of measuring oxygen tension in the body tissues. HBO therapy is a way of delivering great amounts of oxygen to the body tissues by breathing 100% oxygen in a chamber that has been pressurized to more than atmospheric pressure. HBO has been proven to be beneficial for patients diagnosed with the following conditions:

  • chronic wounds
  • compromised skin grafts or flaps
  • necrotizing soft tissue infection
  • gas gangrene
  • osteomyelitis
  • carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning
  • decompression sickness
  • air or gas embolism
  • crush injuries
  • radiation tissue damage

For more information or to schedule a patient for a consultation, please call the Hyperbaric Oxygen Service at (434) 982-3999.

T he N.M. Jones Microsurgical Center

The Nettie Marie Jones Microsurgical Center was founded in 1976 by a grant from the benefactor. This lab is one of the oldest continuously running microsurgery labs in the country. The Center provides instruction in microsurgery for medical students, residents, and faculty, including a one-week course of intense instruction in the techniques of dissection and repair of arteries, veins and nerves. In addition, medical students can elect to spend 2-4 weeks mastering basic microsurgical techniques. We also provide 24-hour coverage for replantation services. Interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged through research and instructional activity. The lab is directed by Raymond F. Morgan, MD and staffed by Randy Amiss, RN. Further inquiries may be directed to the lab at (434) 924-2601.

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic
This clinic offers a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgical services. Dentoalveolar surgery (wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, preprosthetic surgery, biopsy and removal of lesions, etc.) are performed on-site. These procedures can be done using the latest techniques in intravenous sedation when indicated. Consultative services for the management of congenital and  developmental jaw abnormalities, jaw reconstruction, oral and jaw tumors as well as cosmetic jaw surgery are also available. The clinic is directed by Martin A. Hoard, DDS, MD . Call (434) 924-5301 for inquiries or appointments.  Further information of interest to patients can be found from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons' web site. Click here.

The Chief Residents' Clinic
This clinic offers patients quality service and care at a significantly reduced rate. When a patient elects to have a resident as his/her primary surgeon, 40% or more of the surgeon's fee is often waived. More importantly, the operation is done under the guidance of the attending surgeon, who is on hand to teach and aid in the entire procedure. The attending surgeon is also involved in pre-operative visits and in post-operative care.

Plastic surgery residents are physicians who have completed prerequisite training in general surgery or related fields and have elected to continue training in plastic surgery. During the plastic surgery residency, the knowledge and skills to perform various reconstructive and cosmetic procedures are imparted to the resident. All instruction is done by board-certified or board-eligible plastic surgeons, most of whom have additional training in highly specific areas of plastic surgery.
