Pediatric Procedural Sedation Service

The  faculty in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care provide a procedural sedation service on weekdays from 7:30 to 5:00 pm throughout the UVA Children's Hospital.  The purpose of the service is to provide analgesia, sedation and amnesia for pediatric patients receiving diagnostic or therapeutic procedures that may be painful or frightening or require long periods of holding still.  The team consists of an attending physician and a PICU nurse and may also include a physician or nurse in training.  The service is mobile and travels to various inpatient and outpatient areas where pediatric patients receive care.  Routine scheduling of services may be made electronically, and urgent cases may be requested by contacting the nurse or physician on call for the PICU Sedation Team.
