The University of Virginia Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a unit that cares for critically ill or injuried children. The PICU consisit of 12 private rooms for our patients and their families. Our patient population ranges in age from birth to 21 years of age. Each year the PICU admits aproximately one thousand children to the unit through numerous referal sources. Consultation with the attending in the PICU is available 24 hours a day by any of the following methods:

Transportation of criticall ill children is available by neonatal and pediatric transport specialist via air or ground through UVa Pegasus and NETS services.

The PICU multidisciplinary caregivers provide state-of-the-art techniques in monitoring acute neurological, metabolic, respiratory, and cardiovascular function in critically ill children. In addition, the PICU offers all forms of support for multiple or individual organ failure including high frequency ventilation (HFOV), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), extracorporeal renal (CVVHD) and hepatic support, inhaled nitric oxide and other novel pharmacologic therapies.

The PICU is part of the UVa Children's Hospital, a tertiary/quartenary care institution serving the mid-Atlantic & Southeast and supports the  DeCamp Burn Center, the  UVa Trauma Center and the  Blue Ridge Poison Control Center. Additionally, children receive support and monitoring following a variety of surgical procedures by pediatric, cardiothoracic, orthopedic, plastic, ENT, urology, transplant and other pediatric surgical specialists.
