New Hematology/Oncology Physicians

Physicians Bring Additional Experience, Expertise to Cancer Center

To meet the growing need for multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art cancer care and novel clinical trials, UVA is adding three new physicians to the Cancer Center and the Department of Medicine’s Division of Hematology/Oncology.

 Richard Cambareri, M.D.

Cambareri spent 30 years in private practice before coming to UVA earlier this year with the goal of combining patient care with mentoring the next generation of oncologists. “I work hard to connect with patients’ mind, body and spirit,” he says. “That’s something with which I’d like to help the Hematology/Oncology fellows.”

Cambareri will focus on gastrointestinal and lung tumors, though he has broad experience in all areas of oncology. He would also like to be involved in outreach clinics to help make UVA’s advanced cancer care more accessible.

As treatment modalities become increasingly sophisticated, Cambareri enjoys working with patients to create a tailored treatment plan. “Integrating all the modalities is a welcome challenge,” he says.

 Kelly Davidson, M.D.

After 18 months in private practice in Maryland, Davidson returned to UVA, where she had completed a Hematology/Oncology fellowship in 2007. She specializes in all areas of benign and malignant hematology, including anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, bone marrow disorders, leukemia and lymphomas. What helped draw Davidson back to provide care at UVA was the Cancer Center’s team approach to cancer treatment and the opportunity to actively participate in hematology and hematologic malignancy clinical trials.

“UVA has such a good system for cancer care. The hematology team is really excellent, as are pathology, radiology and surgery – it’s just the whole package,” she says. “The hematology team has a lot of experience, not just with the typical cases, but with the rare and complicated cases. There’s a wealth of knowledge here.”

 Thomas Harris, M.D.

Harris is completing a UVA Hematology/Oncology fellowship in June, with a focus on solid tumor malignancies, and is scheduled to join the UVA faculty in July.

He decided to remain at UVA because of his positive experience with UVA’s multidisciplinary cancer team and his interest in combining patient care with innovative clinical trials. “I’m impressed by the compassion the faculty and staff show for their patients and the interest they show in new therapies in the field of oncology,” he says.

His clinical practice will focus on gastrointestinal and lung cancer along with general oncology, while his research will emphasize new treatments for gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer and chemotherapy safety. “If we develop innovative ways to deliver drugs to patients more safely, then our patients will receive an immediate benefit,” he says.
