When to Refer

Patients should be referred as soon as they show signs of liver or intestinal disease. With an early referral, UVA's treatment team may be able to delay or prevent the need for a transplant.

Candidates for a transplant include patients with the following conditions:

Liver

  • End-stage liver disease
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Ascites
  • Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Tumors from cirrhosis

Intestinal

  • Crohn's disease and short bowel syndrome
  • Patients requiring Total Parenteral Nutrition
  • Children born with intestinal malformations leading to short bowel syndrome
