III. POLICIES/ EXPECTATIONS
DRESS CODE
Please expect to wear professional street clothes (white lab jacket and/or scrubs optional), and your UVA ID at all times. Opened-toe shoes and blue jeans are not allowed. It is expected that you appear professional while in the facility. Chewing gum is not permitted in patient care areas.
WORK SCHEDULE
Inpatient hours are typically 8:00-4:30, seven days a week. Because of various meetings, personal schedules, and multi-disciplinary rounds, actual hours for therapists and students may vary according to the team. You and your CI will determine your specific schedule.
Students are not required to work weekends or on major holidays. Therapists for each area are responsible for weekend coverage. Each therapist completes priority patient lists on Fridays. Your CI can assist you with this.
TELEPHONE PHONE/ PAGING SYSTEM
The last five digits of a telephone number are used to make calls within the Health System.
The following prefixes are used at the Health System: 924-, 982-, or 243-.
The paging system consists of the following procedure: Dial 500 -> Page # -> last five digits of the extension to be called.
Pertinent phone numbers are posted near each phone, and a therapy assignment sheet is provided to you by the CCCE.
If you need to make a long distance call regarding a patient, your CI can give you an access code to use.
Personal calls must be kept to a minimum.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
The emergency procedure will be reviewed on you first day of orientation.
Basically, the Health System has the following procedure: Dial 4-2012 (posted on each phone) for either a Code 12 (Cardiac or Respiratory Arrest), a Call To Station (fire), or to Stat Page a particular physician. The emergency operator will pick up, and send the message over the intercom system.
There is an emergency code cart located on each unit. Always stay with your patient in an emergency situation and initiate CPR if indicated.
Be familiar with the assigned exit routes in case of fire, which are posted throughout the hospital.
Fire Safety and other competencies will be completed on your first day of orientation.
PLEASE BRING A COPY OF YOUR CPR CARD WITH YOU.
PHYSICAL THERAPY INSERVICES
Physical Therapy weekly inservices are on Thursdays at 12:00 on the 6th floor. There are also other inservice opportunities available within Therapy Services.
Students are expected to give one inservice to the staff during their affiliation on a pre-approved subject. The medical library is available as a resource for PT students.
TIME OFF/ ILLNESS
If you are sick and unable to come to work, please page or call your clinical instructor to discuss your patients. School policy will be followed concerning making up the time missed. All other time off must be discussed on an individual basis with the CI and/or the CCCE.
