Be able to evaluate patient's illness or injury in an organized manner using evaluation skills to set realistic goals and develop a comprehensive treatment program.

Demonstrate knowledge of treatment techniques by implementing treatment programs in a systematic manner, being aware of patient's condition and the need for alterations in treatment.

Be able to identify pertinent information in the patient's chart and write appropriate evaluations and progress notes.

Be able to instruct patient in post-operative orthopedic programs.

Demonstrate an understanding of safety procedures for both therapist and patient by observing safety rules and practicing proper body mechanics.

Demonstrate an understanding of various levels of ambulation (i.e., non-weight bearing, toe touch, partial weight bearing, weight-bearing to tolerance, full weight bearing) by instructing patient in appropriate gait with assistive devices on level surfaces and stairs.

Demonstrate skill in measuring for and adjusting assistive devices.

Demonstrate an understanding of transfer procedures by instructing and assisting patient in transfers from bed to chair or commode and from sitting to standing.

Demonstrate basic understanding of spinal cord injury and be able to muscle test these patients and to be aware of their early rehab needs.

Instruct in appropriate bedside exercise programs to prevent deconditioning prior to mobilization.

Attend Orthopedic team rounds. Also expect periodic scheduling on the Saturday/Sunday rotation. On those days, you may follow through with activities requested by the primary therapist

Pursue quality patient care in all areas by contacting others involved in patient treatment (i.e., nurses, physicians, social services, family) when indicated.

Aid in the functioning of the department by helping to maintain a clean, orderly work area.

Observe surgery when possible; be able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between these surgical procedures and their respective techniques through effective treatment programs.
