Skin and Wound Care Team Student Information

The student will work with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Plastic Surgery, Enterostomal Therapy nurses, Prostheticians, Orthotists, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery, and a variety of consultant specialists.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Be able to evaluate patient's illness or injury in an organized manner using evaluation skills to set realistic goals and develop a comprehensive treatment program.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of treatment techniques by implementing treatment programs in a systematic manner, being aware of patient's condition and the need for alterations in treatment.

3. Be able to identify pertinent information in the patient's chart and write appropriate evaluations and progress notes.

4. Be able to instruct patient and family in post-discharge woundcare procedures.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of mechanisms of injury, prophylactic measures, infection control, nutritional requirements and tissue regeneration processes.

6. Demonstrate an understanding of various treatment goals (i.e., healing, palliation, pain-control, cost-containment, practicality, prophylaxis) by instructing patient, staff and family in appropriate woundcare interventions.

7. Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological effects of various topical interventions and their potential side-effects.

8. Demonstrate an understanding of the continuum of care by articulating appropriate discharge and follow-up plans.

9. Conduct woundcare rounds with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and demonstrate an ability to optimize resource utilization through appropriate prioritization of patient needs.

10. Aid in the functioning of the Woundcare Team by maintaining current task lists, patient treatment plans, scheduling of follow-up interventions and appropriate communications with other healthcare providers.
