Physical Therapy Scope of Practice

Physical therapists at UVA have bachelors, masters or doctorate degrees in physical therapy and are licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine to practice physical therapy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The staff at UVA also includes therapists with speciality certifications.

UVA physical therapists practice in the inpatient acute setting and in the Childrens Hospital which includes acute peds and a CARF accrediated children's rehabilitation hospital. Although there is a limited degree of Adult outpatient clinic involvement there is an active outpatient Pediatric clinic.

Physical therapists provide therapeutic services to patients with impairments, functional limitations and alterations in their health status. We do this in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals in an academic medical setting in order to provide our patients with optimal health, wellness and fitness.

We consider the patient to be the most important member of this multidisciplinary team. We address a broad spectrum of healthcare needs in partnership with our patients to achieve the most timely return to their home environment
