MEDICAL CENTER POLICY NO. 0058 (I.2.02)

A. SUBJECT: Medical Center Volunteers

B. EFFECTIVE DATE: November 1, 2002 (R)

C. POLICY:

All volunteer activities in the University of Virginia Medical Center shall be approved in advance

and coordinated through the Department of Volunteer Services or their designated representative.

Volunteers shall be properly identified and attired in a manner that is consistent with the policies of the Medical Center.

The Medical Center will provide care to registered volunteers who are injured or become ill, when the injury or illness is work related.

D. PROCEDURE:

1. Requests for volunteers shall be made to the Department of Volunteer Services. Likewise, departments wishing to initiate a volunteer program or refer a potential volunteer shall contact the Volunteer Services (924-5251).

2. Groups working in the Medical Center shall obtain prior approval from and register with the above department.

3. The Department of Volunteer Services may designate representatives to coordinate volunteer activities within the Medical Center.

4. The Medical Center shall provide emergency assessment and care for an authorized volunteer who sustains an accident or injury while on duty. Volunteers who become ill while on duty may be evaluated by the Department of Occupational Health Services, who will assist the volunteer in receiving medical care, if needed. University students will go to Student Health.

5. A volunteer who is injured while volunteering should go directly to the Emergency Department for treatment. The Medical Center staff member witnessing any injury involving a volunteer must initiate a Quality Report and notify Volunteer Services promptly at 924-5251.

6. An injured volunteer presenting at the Emergency Department will be requested to provide insurance information to facilitate billing for the visit. The volunteer should contact Volunteer Services should a question arise concerning the bill for services rendered during the Emergency Department visit.

7. The Medical Center will bill the volunteer’s insurance company for covered services. Volunteers will not be expected to personally pay for Medical Center bills when the illness or injury is work related.
