PHS' Johnston Named Chair of UVa Neurology

Karen Johnston, M.D., M.Sc, Professor of Neurology and Public Health Sciences, has been named Chair of the UVA Department of Neurology effective October 1. Dr Johnston will focus increased attention on translational research and expanding access to UVA's renowned neurology faculty and staff. Her own research has centered on the acute ischemic stroke syndrome, and her work has been well supported by NIH and other agencies. She is active on several nationally recognized research journals and committees.

Dr. Johnston is a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and the Strong Memorial Hospital neurology residency program. She joined the UVA Neurology Department in 1997 and subsequently obtained a masters degree in outcomes research and clinical investigation from the UVA Department of Public Health Sciences.

Dr. Johnston succeeds Dr. George F. (Fred) Wooten who has held the Chair position for nearly 20 years.
