Joint MD/MPH Program |
|
The MD-MPH joint program is a 5-year program designed to provide
students with the opportunity to integrate medical school and public
health course work, research, and community work throughout the five
years. Students enroll full-time in the School of Medicine for four
years and full-time in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)
for one academic year when the student primarily concentrates on public
health course work. Typically the GSAS year occurs between Years 3 and
4 of medical school. Both degrees generally are awarded at the end of 5
years. MPH Information for MD-MPH students
The MPH degree requires 42 credits, up to 6 of which can be earned for
the field placement and the culminating experience project (which can
focus on a public health research project). MPH students may enroll in
an independent research elective for up to 3 additional credits,
working with public health faculty mentors. Up to 9 credits then can be
earned toward the MPH degree in public-health related research and/or
field work. Dual Research Credit Application for dual research credit that qualifies for both MPH course credit and medical school elective credit is awarded on a case-by-case basis and should be coordinated with research mentors in both the public health program and the medical school's dean of student affairs.
MD-MPH students enroll full-time in the medical school during Years 1, 2, and 3. Students are invited to take part in MPH courses and projects, per time availability and interest. Students enroll full-time in the MPH degree program for one year between their 3rd and 4th years of medical school. They are enrolled and pay tuition as full-time students in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences for two semesters, from August through May of that year. Then in June, students also generally enroll in a 3-credit MPH course during the first summer session. Students return to full-time medical school status (and tuition) beginning in June/July for their 4th year of medical school (5th year in the joint program). Medical students will complete the remaining 5 or 6 MPH credits during this academic year, while enrolled as 4th year medical students. For the months of July, August and September, medical students will focus on regular 4th year medical school electives. Particularly during the months of October and November, students will have time to focus on completing their public health research and MPH-required projects. Students also may enroll in additional MPH courses during the year, with permission.
