|
The Department of Public Health Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) and the School of Law are proud to offer a joint degree program at the University of Virginia. Admission to the Program The student is required to secure admission separately to the Law School and to the MPH program in the Department of Public Health Sciences through GSAS using the standard admissions processes in the two schools. Law students may seek admission to the MPH program after they have begun matriculating at the Law School. The combined JD-MPH program normally takes four years to complete and requires a minimum of 110 credits.
Curriculum Students must meet all of the requirements set by the respective schools for the award of both the J.D. and MPH degrees. In the School of Law this means that the student is required to complete the required curriculum and earn a minimum of 86 credits. The Department of Public Health Sciences requires a minimum of 42 credits including 30 course credits and the completion of a field placement and a "culminating experience" under the supervision of a faculty advisor. With the approval of a Law School representative, a student may fulfill up to 12 of the 86 credits required for the JD through appropriate graduate work in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences or other schools at the University. Similarily, with the appropriate permission, a student may take up to 12 of the 42 credits required for the MPH in the School of Law. However, no more than 18 credits may be applied toward both degrees.
