BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF PGY1 PHARMACY RESIDENT PRECEPTORS
Virginia W. Barton, R.Ph.
Ms. Barton is an Inpatient Supervisor with the Department of Pharmacy, and serves as a management liaison on the Residency Advisory Committee. Ms. Barton received her pharmacy degree from the Samford University, School of Pharmacy in Birmingham, Alabama. Ms. Barton has demonstrated her interest in robotics through several projects, where she provided leadership in the physical renovation of the Primary Care Pharmacy, and the resultant implementation of robotics in both the ambulatory care and inpatient care settings.
Kathleen A. Bledsoe, Pharm.D.
Dr. Bledsoe is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Neurosciences. Her primary practice sites include the neurosurgical/neurology intensive care unit and its associated step-down units, the stroke unit, and the epilepsy unit. She serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in these areas as well. Dr. Bledsoe received her Pharm.D. Degree from Albany College of Pharmacy. She completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency as well as an ASHP-accredited Specialized Residency in Critical Care at the University of Virginia Medical Center. In addition to her areas of practice, she is also interested in infectious diseases.
Locke Boyer, R.Ph., MBA
Mr. Boyer is Assistant Director of Pharmacy, and provides administrative oversight to the inpatient and outpatient operations and the department's Purchasing activities. He has been at the University of Virginia (UVa) Health System for 35 years, and has been actively involved in numerous UVa programs during his tenure within the department. Mr. Boyer is an active participant in various National Purchasing groups, which have included the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and the Novation Supply Company. Mr. Boyer received his pharmacy degree from the Medical College of Virginia, School of Pharmacy and an MBA Degree from James Madison University.
Sharon Boyer, R.Ph.
Ms. Boyer is Assistant Director of Pharmacy, and provides administrative oversight to the department's Quality Management and Pharmacy Automation programs. Ms. Boyer has been actively involved in the development of the pharmacy portion of computerized physician order entry, which has been in place since 1989. She is currently working with MSCS in the implementation of the new CareCast System that will eventually replace our current CPOE system.Additional programs include the PYXIS and McKesson Robotics, which are extensively used within the department and throughout the University of Virginia (UVa) Health System. Ms. Boyer received her pharmacy degree from the West Virginia University, School of Pharmacy. Additional areas of interest include: the appropriate documentation of pharmacist interventions within the medical record, and projects focusing on Medication Safety at Uva.
Marcia Lease Buck, Pharm.D., FCCP
Dr. Buck is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Pediatrics and Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing. Her primary practice sites include the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units and the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center. She serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in these three areas, as well as general pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. Dr. Buck received her B.S. Pharm. and Pharm.D. degrees from Purdue University. She completed a Specialized Residency in Pediatrics and a Fellowship in Pediatric Pharmacotherapy at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her research interests include the use of dopamine agonists and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in children with traumatic brain injury, the use of medications during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and medications for infants and children requiring cardiac surgery. She also publishes Pediatric Pharmacotherapy, a monthly newsletter for pediatric health care providers.
Ramey Campbell, RPh.
Ramey is an inpatient supervisor. He staffs and oversees operations in the inpatient pharmacy, pediatric and sterile products areas; he also serves on the residency advisory committee and the department's recruitment committee. In addition, Ramey prepares the staffing schedule for the entire pharmacist staff intergrating the various staffing areas within and outside of the hospital, and coordinates the proper staffing to match the volume of work. He also serves as the department's pharmacist recruiter and prepares the interview schedules for potential candidates. He also coordinates the orientation process for new pharmacist employees and assesses their progress as new employees within the first year of employment. Ramey attended the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia, School of Pharmacy where he received his degree in pharmacy.
Emily Chen, Pharm.D.
Emily Chen received her Doctor of Pharmacy at Ernest Mario College of Pharmacy at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey and completed her Pharmacy Practice Residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She is currently staffing in the inpatient pharmacy at the University of Virginia Health System Department of Pharmacy, and is part of the Decentral Pharmacy program. She provides clinical services to the General Neurology and Stroke teams and participates as a member of the Stroke Code Team..
Heather L. Cox, Pharm.D., BCPS
As the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Diseases, Dr. Cox provides pharmacotherapy services for both the antimicrobial stewardship and the adult infectious diseases consult teams. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from McGill University in Montréal, Québec, Canada and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She then completed residencies in Pharmacy Practice and Infectious Diseases at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her interests include antimicrobial stewardship, mechanisms of resistance, and HIV pharmacotherapy.
Kathlene DeGregory, Pharm.D., BCOP
Dr. DeGregory is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Hematology/Oncology. Her primary practice sites are the inpatient oncology unit, Stem Cell Transplant Clinic, and the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant unit where she precepts Pharmacy Residents and Pharm.D. students. Kathlene received her B.S. Degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and her Pharm.D. Degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Rebecca Haynes Hockman, Pharm.D., BCPS
Dr. Hockman is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. She received her BS and Pharm.D. Degrees from the Medical College of Virginia/ Virginia Commonwealth University. She serves as preceptor for Pharm.D. students, PGY1 Practice Residents, and PGY2 Critical Care Residents. Dr. Hockman also serves as Co-Program Director for the Critical Care Residency.
Julie J. Kelsey, Pharm.D.
Dr. Kelsey is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Women's Health. Her primary practice sites include Obstetrics (Labor & Delivery), Gynecology, and Gynecologic Oncology. She serves as a preceptor to residents and Pharm.D. students in these areas as well. Dr. Kelsey received her Pharm.D. Degree from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Utah and a Specialized Residency in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Neonatology at The Regional Medical Center at Memphis. In addition to her areas of practice, her other interests include palliative care, and pain management.
Eunsil Lee, Pharm.D.
Dr. Lee is a Clinical Staff Pharmacist in the central pharmacy. Her primary practice sites are shared between the inpatient pharmacy and the Internal Medicine teams. She serves as a preceptor to Pharm.D. students and residents in these areas as well. Dr. Lee received her pharmacy degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and completed an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency at the University of Virginia Health System. In addition to her areas of practice, her other interests include solid organ transplant medicine and HIV/AIDS (antiretroviral) therapy.
Michelle McCarthy, Pharm.D.
Dr. McCarthy is a Drug Information Specialist at the UVa Drug Information Center. She is the Director of the Drug Information Practice Residency and serves as a preceptor to residents and Doctor of Pharmacy students completing drug information rotations. Dr. McCarthy earned her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Mercer University. She completed an ASHP-accredited Drug Information Practice Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She serves as the coordinator of the Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting Program for UVa and is the President Elect of the Virginia Society of Health System Pharmacists (VSHP). She was named the VSHP Health-System Pharmacist of the Year in 2003. In addition to her areas of practice, Dr. McCarthy's professional interests include medical writing and publishing, women's health, and immunizations.
Doug S. Paige, R.Ph.
Mr. Paige is the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Supervisor with the Department of Pharmacy, and serves as a management liaison on the Residency Advisory Committee. Mr. Paige received his pharmacy degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, Mr. Paige served as a decentralized clinical pharmacist on the Pediatric team.
Leah W. Paige, Pharm.D.
Dr. Paige is a Clinical Staff Pharmacist in the central pharmacy. Her primary practice sites are shared between the inpatient pharmacy and the Surgery service. Her primary practice area within the surgery service is Transplantation. She serves as preceptor to Pharm.D. students and residents in these areas as well. Dr. Paige received her Pharm.D. Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.
Stacey E. Pattie, Pharm.D., BCPS
Dr. Pattie is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Adult Internal Medicine. She received her Pharm.D. Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and successfully completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Virginia Health System. Dr. Baker serves as a preceptor and advisor for pharmacy residents and Pharm.D. students and mentors members of the internal medicine decentral pharmacy team.
Jefferson M. Sesler, Pharm.D., BCPS
Dr. Sesler is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery. Dr. Sesler received his BS in Biology from Virginia Tech. He received his BS in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) School of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed an ASHP-accredited Hospital Pharmacy Residency at the MCV Hospitals/Virginia Commonwealth University. He serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students, PGY1 Practice Residents, and PGY2 Critical Care Residents. In addition to his areas of practice, his other interest includes infectious diseases.
David Volles, Pharm.D., BCPS
Dr. Volles is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Surgical / Trauma Intensive Care. Dr. Volles received his BS in Biology from Virginia Tech and Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Volles completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Dr. Volles serves as Program Co-Director for the PGY2 Residency in Critical Care and serves as a preceptor for pharmacy residents, and pharmacy students. He is also a member of the Human Investigation Committee, the institutional review board. His areas of interest include infectious complications in surgery and critically ill patients, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic alterations in critically ill patients, and thromboembolic complications in surgical patients.
Daniel Wandres, Pharm.D.
Dr. Wandres is a Medical Center Administrator and Director of Pharmacy at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He serves as one of the preceptors in the institutional pharmacy/management rotation. Dr. Wandres received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating, he spent several years doing basic research in the areas of cell and molecular biology. His Doctor of Pharmacy Degree is from the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed two clinical residencies. Dr. Wandres has held clinical and management positions in both community and academic hospital settings. He has practiced in drug information/toxicology, internal medicine and psychiatry.
Donna M. White, R.Ph., C.D.E..
Ms. White is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Primary Care. Currently, she serves an Internal Medicine Clinic, where patients are referred for hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, anticoagulation, and tobacco cessation. She also serves in the Diabetes Cardiology Clinic. Ms. White precepts pharmacy residents and Pharm. D. students. She received her BS in Pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. She received her Certification in Diabetes from the National Certification Board For Diabetes Educators. In addition to her areas of practice, her other interests include geriatrics, patient safety, and lipid management. Ms. White is the Program Director for the PGY2 Residency in Primary Care.
Barbara Wiggins, Pharm.D., BCPS (AQ Cardiology) CLS, FAHA.
Dr. Wiggins is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Cardiology. She received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Campus. Following completion of her Pharm.D., Dr. Wiggins completed a fellowship in Cardiology and Emergency Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Wiggins is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine division of Cardiology at the University of Virginia Medical School and Clinical Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. Her clinical practice includes the coronary care unit and cardiology step down units. Additional practice includes medication classes to patients enrolled in Health Systems cardiac rehabilitation program and working in the Lipid Clinic. She serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students, pharmacy practice residents, and specialized residents, and is the Coordinator for Pharmacy Grand Rounds and the Code-12 training program. Dr. Wiggins is also a member of the Cardiovascular Expert Panel for USP and serves as secretary for the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology (ACCL). She is on the board for the Southeast Lipid Association (SELA). She has been awarded diplomate status with the ACCL that designates her a Clinical Lipid Specialist. Dr. Wiggins is also a Fellow of the American Heart Association and the Council on Clinical Cardiology. Her areas of interests include lipid management, acute coronary syndromes, and congestive heart failure. Dr. Wiggins has published numerous articles and book chapters in the field of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy.
