Department of Pharmacy Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, we are a centralized order-processing and dispensing department with decentralized pharmacy services serving a 600-bed tertiary care center. Automation includes pyxis point-of-care dispensing capabilities, physician order entry computer system, robot cart-filling, and a pneumatic tube system. We have also implemented a state-of-the-art IV Compounding room. We are aggressively implementing automation of all dispensing functions in order to further expand the professional roles of all our staff. |
General Residency Information
The University has supported post-graduate experiential pharmacy education since 1991 when the PGY1 Pharmacy residency was first accredited by ASHP. Since that time, two PGY2 Residencies, Drug Information (1998) and Critical Care (2002), were established and accredited.
Under the guidance of our Clinical Specialists, residents will learn to manage day-to-day clinical activities with longitudinal and project management responsibilities. The resident will be integrated into the medical team and pharmacy staff and work closely with healthcare personnel to optimize pharmacotherapy plans. This unique and tailored experience will build a foundation for the resident to provide a high level of clinical pharmacy practice in the future.
Certifications
Residents undergo ACLS training and certification. Residents have the opportunity to participate in the Certificate in Public Health Sciences for Resident and Fellow Physicians.
