PGY2 Drug Information Residency Director

 

Michelle W. McCarthy, Pharm.D.

Dr. McCarthy is the Director of Medication Management Use and Policy for the University of Virginia Department of Pharmacy Services.  In this role, she is responsible for the health system formulary, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, medication use policy, and accreditation and regulatory requirements for the Department.  She is the founder and director of the drug information residency. She also serves as the program director for the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program.  She is a preceptor for PGY1 pharmacy residents and Doctor of Pharmacy students completing drug information rotations.  Dr. McCarthy, a graduate of Mercer University, completed an ASHP-accredited Drug Information Practice Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Awards include the 1997 Teacher of the Year at Samford University School of Pharmacy, 2003 Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (VSHP) Pharmacist of the Year, and 2008 Louis P. Jeffrey Preceptor of the Year.  She is the Education Committee Chair and Continuing Education Administrator for VSHP and a Past President of the organization.  Additionally, she is a member of  the ASHP Commission on Credentialing.  Other professional interests include medical writing and publishing, women's health, and immunizations.
