Pegasus Flight Operations

Pegasus is a hospital based air and ground medical transport service providing care to critically ill or injured patients.  Starting its operation in 1984, Pegasus is part of the University of Virginia Health System and is committed to providing prompt and safe transport.

Accessing Pegasus can be done through our 24 hour dispatch center.

Aircraft

Our aircraft is an Augusta 109E Power helicopter that is twin engine, single pilot IFR rated, and night vision goggle equipped. The programs's primary operational area is within a 120 NM radius of Charlottesville, VA.  The program also has a BK-117 that is utilized as a back-up aircraft.  Our communications center can assist you with arrangements for longer or international flights.

Critical Care Ground

The Critical Care Ground Unit is built on a Freightliner FL 60 crew cab chassis and was converted to an ambulance by PL Custom Ambulance in New Jersey.  Some of the specialty equipment included are an 8 KW active PTO generator, increased heating and cooling systems, refrigerator, and TV/VCR.  The vehicle was designed specifically with the topographic necessities of the region in mind.  It is based at the UVA Medical Center and has responded to interfacility, on scene, and mass-casualty incidents in both Virginia and West Virginia.

Staff

The medical crew configuration consists of a registered nurse and a nationally registered and critical care paramedic. Medical crew members are trained in all aspects of emergency care and have the capability to transport all types of patients. All medical crew members maintain advance life support certifications in cardiac, trauma, and pediatric care. Other certifications in the use of specialty devices such as, intra-aortic balloon pumps, ventricular assist devices and ventilators are also maintained. If necessary, other crew configurations may be used when patient condition or mission requirements dictate.

All of our pilots are highly trained and undergo rigorous proficiency checks.  We maintain our own maintenance facility with two full-time mechanics and all aircraft are hangared.  All pilots, mechanics, and aviation services are provided to Pegasus through Omniflight Helicopters, Inc.
