Wards

The wards are organized such that there are two third-year residents, three interns, and six to eight medical students. We cover all General Pediatric admits as well as all non-surgical subspecialty patients with the exception of the Heme/Onc kids. As senior resident we take call every 4th night.

Here's a typical day as Ward Senior:

The day generally starts around 7:30 a.m. by receiving overnight updates on all old patients and a brief summary of new admissions from the on-call team. If there are no urgent matters, the Ward Seniors split up to either touch base with the interns while they pre-round and work on early discharges, or will sit down with the medical students to teach and discuss their patients. Between 8:00-8:30 a.m. we have morning report, with rounds beginning immediately afterwards. During rounds, we go over General Pediatric patients with the Chief Resident and Ward attending. We round with the subspecialists in a fluid fashion as they are available. We usually have a robust Cardiology service and will round with the Cardiology fellow or attending at 10:30 a.m. After rounds it is time to work. The Ward Seniors will work with the post-call intern to get his/her work completed before noon conference, admit new patients, see consults, dictate discharged patients, etc. At 12:00 p.m., the post-call residents sign out before noon conference at 12:15 p.m. On Mondays and Thursdays, the Ward Senior will meet with social work, nursing, OT, PT, and speech for multi-disciplinary rounds at 1:00 p.m. On Tuesday, we have ID conference, and Thursday is Cardiology conference at 1:00 p.m. The rest of the afternoon is spent admitting patients, accepting PICU transfers, preparing patients for discharge for the following morning, and teaching interns/students. At 4:00 p.m., we sign out to the on-call team and are usually out the door by 5:00 p.m.
