Chief Residents

Brian Belyea
University of Virginia

Belyea When I was applying for residency programs, I quickly realized that no matter where I ended up, I would be working 80 hours a week, doing 2 months of NICU, and be on call every fourth night.  With the work requirements standardized by the ACGME, each program's schedule was very similar.  Therefore, the characteristics of the programs that I looked at to distinguish one as better than the other were largely non-work related.  I looked at extracurricular opportunities in the community, safety of the city, and happiness of the current residents. At UVA, I found the best combination of an excellent pediatric residency program in an environment that is friendly, safe, and full of rich cultural opportunities.  Charlottesville offers all the advantages of a big city and the comforts of a small town.  At work, I spend my time with wonderful residents and attendings, and I am receiving a fantastic pediatric education.  And when I'm home, my wife and I enjoy the wonderful restaurants,  farmer's market, Downtown Mall, peach orchards, and many many other exciting activities in Charlottesville.

GloverAfter hatching, in the Midwest, and moving all over the country (13 total states lived in).  I have finally decided to settle here in Charlottesville, at least for a few years.  I went to Eckerd College in Florida for an undergraduate degree in marine biology, and decided it was far too warm.  So I went north to medical school at the University of Vermont, where it was too cold. Here at UVA, it's just right.  The move to Charlottesville has made me extremely happy as it has made my previously long distance girlfriend, Cristen, now my wife.  Other things that help to keep me sane include our pug, Charlie, mountain biking with other residents, running and basketball, an occasional card game, skiing, hiking, and traveling.  My plans for the future include a Pediatric Hematology and Oncology fellowship in Oregon.   Please feel free to email me with any questions about UVA, Charlottesville, or just about what its like to be a resident.
