Pediatric Surgery
As an Intern, we have one month of Pediatric Surgery. We work with ER residents, Surgery residents, Surgery nurses, and two or three medical students. Call is every fourth night.
Here's a typical day on Pediatric Surgery:
Rounds begin at 6:00 a.m. in the PICU every day except for Wednesday when they start at 5:00 a.m. because of a Surgery conference. If I am not on call or post-call, I don't have to pre-round. Only the post-call resident does the pre-rounding. This makes for some earlier
mornings, but I prefer it to pre-rounding every day. There are two attendings, and each has one day of clinic during the week. Clinic is busy and fast with some really interesting cases. The patients are great and the variety is a nice alternative to cold and flu season in general clinic. Each attending also has a scheduled operating day with extra cases added in as needed the rest of the week. I am expected occasionally in the OR during the month, but my major responsibility is covering the floor patients. There are outpatient cases several days a week especially appropriate for my training as a general pediatrician. If I am not on call and there's no clinic, I'll help out on the floor until mid-afternoon. When I am on call, I manage the floor patients, see consults, and cover traumas in the ER with the Surgery Chief. Overnight, a "super chief" is on for new patients while my chief is reachable with questions about current patients. When I am post-call, I may go to the outpatient surgery center or to clinic until I finish my thirty-hour shift. The attendings are fantastic and want your experience to be a good one. During your month you will also give a pediatrics morning report.
