Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center
Inpatient Rehabilitation Outcomes Overview
2006
Patients and family outcomes at KCRC are reviewed during their stay and after they leave to make sure 1. that they are getting better, 2. that patient and family resources are used in the best manner, and 3. that the experience was a good one.
- A large majority of the inpatient rehabilitation children that KCRC cares for are patients with brain and/or other traumatic injuries. Spinal cord injuries are second to only head injuries as the most common type of patient that we see. On average patients are with us for about 4-5 weeks. Some stays can be shorter or longer depending on each child's need and program plans.
- Activities of daily living, both physical (movement, doing age appropriate activities) and brain abilities (talking, learning, problem solving) are measured against pre-set goals to help plan care and assess progress.
- KCRC patients on average, see about a 23% increase in functioning (self care, movement, and communication abilities) from when they get here to when they leave. Additional gains can be expected after discharge too - on average ABI patients had an additional 24%, SCI patients had 12% and stroke patients 10%.
- Another measure looks at each head injury patient's level of awareness and responsiveness. Approximately 66% of KCRC patients leave at a level 7 or 8 (much better where patient is more aware and can carry out their daily routines). This is compared to only 10% having a level 7 or 8 at admission.
- 87% of children returned to their home and about 28% return to school in a classroom based setting. 89-97% of families stated they returned to their "community" and other social activities. 94% said that their child had been involved in play/leisure activities in the last week.
- 95% of families reported that they agree or strongly agree to being satisfied with the child's transition to home. 93% (those applicable) with transition to school.
- 95% of patients/families reported they agree or strongly agree to being satisfied with child's transition back to the community.
- 98% of patients/families reported they agree or strongly agree to being satisfied with child's re-entry to play/leisure activities.
